In a hierarchal society, there are effects of scale that tend to diminish the influence of the most authoritative members. If the ability to govern is based on a constant number of degrees of separation, and maximum number of contacts, then the form of hierarchy must change to reflect the need to delegate authority more broadly. Assuming, say, six degrees of separation, and 150 as the maximum number of personal contacts, what would the structures of various hierarchies resemble? Are HS subject to geometric and numeric constraints, even if we allow an undefined number of dimensions in which positions can be arranged? Can anyone come up with an array of 7 billion people, given constraints similar to these? I'm stumped as to what such systems would look like, but the idea is kind of fascinating, and it would be interesting to see if this line of thought had any reflection in the real world. P:D
