A hypothesis is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon.

A mathematical hypothesis is a proposed relationship between the elements of a phenomenon, or between two or more separate phenomena.

Many hypotheses of pure mathematics are later found to have applications long after their characteristic features have been proposed and finalized. Many systems of pure mathematics are preferred to other proposals based on their symmetry and elegance, and this may help to explain both the remarkable strengths and weaknesses of Mathematics.
